How to Use a Heavy Duty Pipe Wrench
Choose the right size
Match the wrench to the pipe. A 12" wrench is designed for pipe up to about 50mm (2"), and works best between ½" and 1½". Too small and you cannot generate the leverage — you will chew the teeth. Too large and the jaws cannot close far enough to bite properly.
Set the jaw opening
Turn the knurled adjusting nut until the gap between the jaws is slightly smaller than the pipe's outside diameter. This is the step most people get wrong. The jaws must close onto the pipe under tension — set them exactly to size and the wrench will slip.
Position the wrench correctly
The hook jaw (top) must face the direction you are turning. To tighten a right-hand thread, the hook jaw points in the direction of rotation; to loosen, flip the wrench over. Push the pipe fully into the throat of the jaws so it seats near the back, not out at the tips — the tips give you a weak bite and bent teeth.
Take the bite
Rock the wrench slightly so the hook jaw's teeth set into the pipe surface. You should feel it catch.
Pull, don't push
Always pull the handle towards you. If the wrench slips or the fitting breaks free suddenly, a pull sends you backwards clear of the work; a push drives your knuckles into the pipe, the wall or the fitting behind. Keep your body braced and your feet planted.
Reset and repeat
A pipe wrench turns in one direction only. At the end of each stroke, release pressure, rock the wrench back, re-seat the bite and pull again — the same ratchet-like rhythm you would use with a ratchet spanner.
Use two wrenches on a joint
When separating two fittings, use a second wrench as a backup wrench on the fixed side, turning in the opposite direction. This keeps the twisting force inside the joint instead of transferring it down the line and cracking a fitting, a valve or a run you were not working on.
🔩 Loosening a seized or rusted joint
- Soak the joint in penetrating oil and leave it 15–30 minutes. Patience here saves broken fittings.
- Try to tighten the joint a few degrees first — breaking the rust seal in the tightening direction is often easier — then reverse.
- Seat the bite deep in the jaw throat and apply steady, increasing force. Do not jerk.
- Use the wrench's own handle length only.
- If it will not move, step up to a 14" or 18" wrench rather than forcing the 12".
🛠️ Getting the most life out of the tool
- Do not use a pipe wrench on nuts, bolts or chrome-plated fittings — the hardened teeth will destroy the finish and round the corners. Use a spanner or a strap wrench for those.
- Never use the wrench as a hammer, a lever or a clamp.
- Keep the jaws clean. Grit packed between the teeth is why a wrench that used to bite starts slipping.
Safety Precautions
- Wear safety glasses and work gloves. Rust scale and metal fragments come off fittings under load.
- Inspect before every use: cracked frame, worn or missing teeth, a nut that will not hold its setting — retire the tool or replace the jaws.
- Pull, never push. Do not stand where a sudden release would put you into a wall, a ladder edge or a drop.
- No cheater bars, and never strike the handle with a hammer.
- Do not use a pipe wrench on live pressurised or gas lines until the line has been isolated and depressurised.
- Keep both hands and loose clothing clear of the jaw throat.
- Keep out of reach of children — the teeth are sharp and the tool is heavy.
