What you will need

• Crown Rust Remover 5 L
• Acid-resistant gloves (nitrile or rubber), safety goggles, long sleeves and closed shoes
• Wire brush, scraper or emery cloth / sandpaper (80–120 grit)
• Stiff paint brush, sponge or lint-free rags — plastic bucket, never a steel one
• Clean water in a bucket or hosepipe, plus clean dry cloths
• Metal primer (red oxide or zinc chromate) and your topcoat

1. Read the label and put on protection. This is an acid. Wear gloves and eye protection before you open the cap, and work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Keep children and pets away from the working area.
2. Clean the surface first. Wash off grease, oil, dust, cobwebs and old loose paint with soapy water or a degreaser and let the surface dry. The rust remover reacts with rust, not with grease — any oily film will block it and give patchy results.
3. Knock off loose rust and flaking paint. Use a wire brush, scraper or emery cloth to remove flaky scale and blistered paint. You are not trying to reach bare metal here — just removing anything loose so the chemical can reach the rust underneath. This step alone cuts your product consumption by up to a third.
4. Test on a small area. Especially on painted, plated or unfamiliar metal, apply to a hidden patch first and check the result after 15 minutes before committing to the whole job.
5. Decant, never dip the brush into the jerrycan. Pour what you need into a clean plastic container and close the 5 L cap. This keeps the bulk product uncontaminated and extends its shelf life.
6. Apply generously and evenly. Brush, sponge or wipe the solution over the rusted area until it is visibly wet. Work in manageable sections — about one square metre at a time — so nothing dries out before it has reacted. For small parts such as bolts, hinges, tools or brackets, simply immerse them in a plastic tray of the solution.
7. Let it dwell 15 – 30 minutes. You will see the rust darken and loosen. Keep the surface wet by re-wetting it if it starts drying, particularly on hot afternoons. Heavy or pitted rust may need 45 – 60 minutes.
8. Agitate the softened rust. Scrub with the wire brush, an abrasive pad or emery cloth while the surface is still wet. The rust should now come away easily as a dark sludge.
9. Repeat on stubborn areas. Deeply pitted corrosion often needs a second — occasionally a third — application. Reapply and repeat steps 6 to 8 until you reach sound grey metal.
10. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. This is the step people skip and later regret. Any acid residue left behind will attack the new paint film from below. Hose or sponge down with plenty of clean water until no slipperiness or acid smell remains.
11. Dry completely and immediately. Wipe with clean dry cloths and let the metal air-dry fully. Do not let bare wet steel stand — flash rust can form within an hour in humid weather.
12. Prime the same day. Apply Crown Red Oxide Metal Primer or Zinc Chromate Primer as soon as the surface is dry — ideally within 2 to 4 hours, and never beyond 24 hours. Follow with your gloss, enamel or metal topcoat once the primer has cured per its own label.
