Note on dimensions: ladder "4 x 5" describes the step count, not the metre length. Four sections of five rungs give 20 rungs and roughly 5.7 m of straight ladder — do not confuse it with a 4 m or 5 m single ladder.
Every position is set by releasing the spring pins on the hinges, swinging the section to the angle you want, and letting the pins snap home. Always hear and feel all four hinges lock before you load the ladder.
Lock the two centre hinges at the A position, sections 1+2 on one side and 3+4 on the other. Stands about 2.5 m for ceiling boards, gypsum, lighting and painting — free-standing, no wall needed.
Lock all four sections in line for a rigid 5.7 m straight ladder. Lean it at 75° against the wall for gutters, roofs, water tanks, aerials and second-floor work.
Shorten one leg by folding the bottom section back so the two legs sit at different heights. This is how you work safely on staircases, split levels and sloping ground.
Fold the top section vertical against the wall and keep the lower sections as the base. Lets you get in tight against a corner, a hedge or a parapet without over-reaching.
Two FFL45-FRP ladders in A-frame plus a certified scaffold plank between matching rungs gives a low working platform for long wall runs, plastering and cornice work.
Open the sections into a shallow M shape and drop a board across for a site bench — handy for cutting WPC panels, mitring skirting or laying out cable.
Follow this sequence every single time. Most ladder injuries in Kenya come from set-up shortcuts, not from ladder failure.
Check the fiberglass rails for cracks, splinters or deep gouges, check all 20 rungs are tight, confirm the four rubber feet are present and not worn smooth, and work the hinge pins to be sure they spring back freely. Never use a ladder with a cracked rail — fiberglass fails suddenly, not gradually.
Set the feet on solid, dry, level ground. Do not stand the ladder on loose murram, wet tiles, a sand pile, blocks, bricks or a table. Where the ground slopes, use the stairway position instead of packing anything under one leg.
Stand the folded ladder upright, press the release pins, swing each section to the position you need and release the pin so it snaps into the hole. Push and pull each joint to confirm it is locked before any weight goes on it.
Leaning against a wall, the base goes one metre out for every four metres of height (a 75° angle). Too steep and it tips backwards; too shallow and the feet slide out.
When climbing onto a roof, slab or tank, the ladder must project about one metre (three rungs) above the landing point so you have something to hold while stepping off.
Above three metres, tie the top stiles off to a fixed point or have a second person foot the ladder. On smooth polished floors, add a rubber mat or brace the feet against a block.
Two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, at all times. Face the ladder going up and coming down. Carry tools in a belt or hoist them on a rope — never in your hands.
If you have to lean out past the stiles, come down and move the ladder. Over-reaching is the single most common cause of ladder falls.
Release the pins, fold the sections back together, and store the ladder flat or hung horizontally on brackets in a dry store. Keep fiberglass out of permanent direct sun to protect the resin surface.

The FRP rails do not conduct electricity the way aluminium does, which is why electricians, solar installers and telecom crews specify fiberglass for work near live low-voltage circuits. Keep the rails clean and dry — dirt, moisture and metallic dust on the surface reduce the benefit. No ladder replaces certified live-line equipment and proper isolation procedure on high-voltage systems.
