The Fundi Folding Aluminium Ladder FFL43 is a multipurpose articulated ladder built around four hinged aluminium sections of three rungs each — twelve rungs in total. Each of the three hinges is a locking joint that snaps and holds at fixed angles, so a single ladder replaces the step ladder, the straight extension ladder and the trestle you would otherwise buy separately.

It is the ladder most suited to painters, electricians, signage crews, solar and DSTV installers, plumbers, shopfitters, facility maintenance teams and homeowners working on single- and double-storey buildings. How to Use the Fundi FFL43 Folding Ladder

Before every use — the 60-second check

1. Stand the folded ladder on level ground and look along each stile for bends, dents, cracks or corrosion. A bent stile takes the ladder out of service permanently.
2. Press each hinge release button in and out. It must spring back sharply and the pin must seat fully. A sticky hinge gets a light spray of penetrating oil; a hinge that does not seat is a scrap ladder.
3. Check all twelve rungs are tight in their stiles — no rattle, no rotation, no loose rivets.
4. Check all four feet still have their anti-slip caps and that the caps are not worn smooth, split or clogged with cement.
5. Wipe grease, mud, wet paint or oil off the rungs and off the soles of your boots.

Setting up as a straight extension ladder

1. Lay the ladder flat on the ground with the feet against the base of the wall.
2. Press both release buttons on each hinge and swing the sections out until all three joints click flat at 180°. Tug each joint to confirm the pins are locked.
3. Walk the ladder upright hand over hand, then place it against the wall at the 1-in-4 rule: the foot sits one metre out from the wall for every four metres of ladder height — about 75°. At full 3.5 m extension the feet should be roughly 0.85 m out.
4. Ensure the ladder extends at least 1 metre (about 3 rungs) above any roof edge or platform you intend to step onto.
5. Have a second person foot the ladder, or tie the stiles off at the top, before climbing.

Setting up as an A-frame step ladder

1. Lock the two outer hinges flat at 180° so each half is a rigid six-rung run.
2. Release the centre hinge and open the ladder into an A until the centre joint locks at its A-frame detent.
3. Set it on firm, level ground with all four feet in contact. Never bridge a step, a plank or loose blocks to level it.
4. Climb no higher than the third rung from the top and never stand on or straddle the top hinge.
5. Keep your belt buckle between the stiles at all times — move the ladder rather than over-reaching.

Setting up on a staircase or sloping ground

1. Lock the centre hinge flat at 180°.
2. Drop the outer hinge on the downhill side to its 90° detent so the lower legs reach the lower step or the fall of the slope.
3. Adjust until the rungs you will stand on are visibly horizontal, then load-test with your hands and one foot before committing your weight.

Using as a trestle scaffold

1. Open two FFL43 ladders flat into low trestles, positioned no more than the plank manufacturer’s maximum span apart.
2. Bridge them with a certified scaffold plank or staging board — never a random timber board or a door.
3. Seat the plank on matching rungs on both ladders so it is level, and let it overhang each support by at least 150 mm.
4. Keep the platform low, one worker per plank span unless the plank is rated for more, and never join two planks over one rung.

Folding and storing

1. Bring the ladder to the ground before releasing any hinge.
2. Press both buttons on a joint at once and fold the section, keeping fingers clear of the closing scissor gap — this is the single most common injury with articulated ladders.
3. Fold all sections together and store the ladder flat or hung horizontally on wall brackets, indoors, out of the rain and away from cement dust and acids.
4. Every few months, wipe the ladder down and put a drop of light oil in each hinge to keep the pins free.
