Product Overview
The GJS JS8588-125 MAB cylinder lock combines classic good looks with everyday security. Its lever handles are mounted on long decorative backplates finished in matt antique brass – a warm bronze-gold tone that blends beautifully with mahogany, mvule, cypress, veneered and dark-painted doors. Behind the handles sits a mortise lock body with a spring latch and a key-thrown deadbolt, operated by a pin-tumbler cylinder and supplied keys.
Whether you are building a new home in Ongata Rongai, renovating an apartment in Karen or Lang'ata, or replacing a worn-out lock in Kiserian or Kitengela, the GJS JS8588 series is a popular choice among Kenyan fundis and homeowners for its smooth action, solid feel and tidy finish. Shabbiri Hardware has supplied builders and families from Magadi Road since 1990.

How to Install the GJS JS8588-125 MAB Cylinder Lock
For best results, have the lock fitted by an experienced carpenter or fundi. Shabbiri Hardware is supply-only, but we're happy to share contacts of independent installers.
- Check the door. Confirm the door thickness and that the edge is wide enough for the mortise lock body. Decide the handle height – usually about 1,000–1,050 mm from the finished floor.
- Mark out. Hold the lock body against the door edge and mark its outline. Use the backplate as a template on both faces to mark the spindle hole and cylinder hole positions.
- Cut the mortise. Drill a row of holes into the door edge to the depth of the lock case, then clean out with a sharp chisel until the lock body slides in neatly.
- Rebate the faceplate. Chisel a shallow recess so the lock faceplate sits flush with the door edge.
- Drill spindle & cylinder holes. Drill through both faces at the marked points, drilling halfway from each side to avoid splitting the veneer.
- Fit the lock body & cylinder. Insert the lock case, screw the faceplate, then slide in the cylinder and secure it with the cylinder fixing screw through the lock edge.
- Mount the handles. Insert the spindle, fit inside and outside lever plates, and tighten the through-bolts evenly – do not over-tighten, or the levers may bind.
- Fit the strike plate. Close the door, mark where the latch and bolt meet the frame, cut the recesses and screw the strike plate flush.
- Test. Check the lever returns smoothly, the latch catches without slamming, and the key throws and withdraws the deadbolt from both sides.
Daily Use & Care Tips
Using the Lock
- Press the lever down to withdraw the latch and open the door.
- Turn the key fully to throw the deadbolt – the door is then locked.
- Turn the key back fully to retract the bolt before pressing the lever.
- Remove the key after locking; store spare keys safely.
Caring for the MAB Finish
- Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Avoid abrasive powders, thinners, bleach or acidic cleaners.
- Mask the handles when painting or varnishing the door.
- Keep cement and plaster splashes off during construction.
Maintenance
- Every few months, spray dry graphite or lock lubricant into the keyway.
- Do not use cooking oil or grease in the cylinder – it attracts dust.
- Re-tighten handle screws if the levers feel loose.
- Never force a stiff key – check door alignment with the strike plate.
Where to Use
Main entrance doors under a veranda or porch, bedroom and master-bedroom doors, study rooms, offices, apartments, guest houses, hotels and schools. For fully exposed external doors, consider pairing with a steel security door or additional deadlock.
