Product Overview

Hessian cloth (also called burlap or jute sacking cloth) is a coarse, plain-woven fabric made from natural jute fibre. This 40 inch x 9 oz x 550 yard hessian roll is a medium-heavy grade that balances strength, coverage and breathability – one of the most useful materials on any construction site, farm, workshop or warehouse in Kenya.

Contractors in Nairobi use it to keep new concrete wet during curing, fundis use it to reinforce gypsum and plaster of Paris ceilings and cornices, and landscapers use it for erosion control and wrapping tree root balls.

Applications & Uses

1. Concrete Curing

Lay wet hessian over slabs, beams, columns and screeds to lock in moisture, reduce shrinkage cracks and help concrete reach full strength.

2. Gypsum & POP Ceilings

Reinforcement for plaster of Paris ceiling boards, cornices and mouldings, and for bonding joints in gypsum ceiling work.

3. Landscaping & Erosion Control

Holds soil on slopes and embankments while grass establishes, then breaks down naturally.

4. Tree Planting & Nurseries

Wrap root balls of seedlings and trees for transplanting; shield young plants from sun and wind.

5. Sacks, Bags & Packaging

Stitch into sacks for grain, potatoes, charcoal and coffee, or wrap bales and furniture for transport.

6. Upholstery & Mattresses

A durable backing and base layer for sofas, chairs, mattresses and cushions.

7. Site Protection

Protect finished floors, tiles and stairs from dirt and scratches during construction; use as sandbag material.

8. Crafts, Décor & Events

Rustic table runners, wall panels, gift wrapping, garden décor and school or church event backdrops.

How to Use – Step by Step

A. Curing Concrete

  1. Wait until the surface is hard enough not to mark (usually 2–4 hours after finishing).
  2. Cut hessian to length, allowing about 150 mm (6") overlap between strips.
  3. Soak the hessian fully in clean water before laying – dry hessian pulls water out of the concrete.
  4. Lay it flat over the surface; wrap columns and beams tightly and tie with wire or twine.
  5. Keep it wet by sprinkling water 2–3 times a day, more on hot or windy days.
  6. Cure for at least 7 days (10–14 days for blended cements or hot weather).
  7. Rinse and dry in the shade to re-use on the next pour.

B. Gypsum / POP Ceiling & Cornice Work

  1. Cut hessian into strips or sheets to suit the mould or panel size.
  2. Pour a first thin layer of mixed plaster into the mould.
  3. Dip the hessian in plaster slurry and press it into the wet layer, removing air pockets.
  4. Add a second plaster layer to fully embed the hessian; add timber battens if needed.
  5. For board joints, bed plaster-soaked hessian strips over the joint and smooth off.
  6. Let it set fully before demoulding, fixing or sanding.

C. Landscaping & Tree Planting

  1. Level and prepare the soil, then sow grass seed or plant cuttings.
  2. Roll hessian down the slope from top to bottom, overlapping edges 100–150 mm.
  3. Pin every 1 m with U-shaped wire pegs or stakes; bury the top edge in a small trench.
  4. For root-balling, draw a square of hessian up around the soil ball and tie firmly at the stem.
  5. Water straight through the hessian – water and air pass while soil stays in place.

D. Cutting & Handling the Roll

  1. Unroll on a clean, flat surface and measure with a tape.
  2. Pull out one cross thread along the cut line to get a straight guide.
  3. Cut along the pulled thread with heavy-duty scissors or a sharp utility knife.
  4. Fold and stitch, or glue, the cut edge to stop fraying.
Safety: Jute burns easily – keep hessian away from open flames, welding and hot works. Wear a dust mask when cutting large amounts, and gloves when working with plaster or cement.

Why Choose This Hessian Roll?

  • 9 oz medium-heavy grade – stronger than light 7 oz hessian, easier to handle than 10–12 oz.
  • 40 inch width – practical for slabs, ceiling moulds, sacks and garden beds.
  • 550 yard full roll – best value for contractors, ceiling fundis and bulk users.
  • High water retention – ideal for proper concrete curing.
  • Breathable – air flow prevents sweating and mould.
  • Eco-friendly – natural, renewable and biodegradable jute.
  • Re-usable – rinse and dry for several curing cycles.
Storage & care tips
  • Store rolls on pallets in a dry, ventilated room, away from rain and ground moisture.
  • After curing, rinse off cement and dry fully in the shade before rolling up.
  • Keep away from rodents, termites, fuels and chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 9 oz hessian mean?

It is the fabric weight – one square yard weighs about 9 ounces (approx. 305 g/m²). 9 oz is a versatile medium-heavy grade for construction, ceiling and packaging work.

How much area does one roll cover?

40 inches (1.016 m) wide x 550 yards (approx. 503 m) long = about 611 sq yards or 511 m² before overlaps.

Can hessian be used for curing concrete?

Yes. Wet hessian holds moisture on fresh concrete, slowing evaporation so the concrete gains strength and resists cracking. Keep it damp for at least 7 days.

Is hessian the same as burlap?

Yes. "Hessian" is the common name in Kenya, the UK and India; "burlap" is the American name for the same woven jute fabric.

Is it good for gypsum and POP ceilings?

Yes. Hessian is widely used to reinforce plaster of Paris boards, cornices and joints, adding strength and reducing cracks.
