Fundi Folding Aluminium Ladder FFL42 – 4×2 Multipurpose Ladder (8 Steps, 150 kg)

One ladder, four working positions. The Fundi FFL42 folds into four hinged sections of two steps each, so it opens as a free-standing A-frame step ladder, a straight leaning ladder, an L-shape for wall work, or a stair ladder for uneven ground — then folds down to under 0.7 m to fit behind a door or in a car boot.

  • 4 sections × 2 steps = 8 rungs
  • 150 kg (330 lb) rated load
  • Approx. 2.3 m fully extended
  • Approx. 1.1 m as an A-frame
  • Anti-rust aluminium alloy
  • Serrated anti-slip rungs

Product overview

The Fundi Folding Aluminium Ladder FFL42 is the smallest and most popular size in the Fundi multipurpose folding range (FFL42, FFL43, FFL44, FFL45, FFL46). The code reads simply: FFL for Fundi Folding Ladder, 4 for the four hinged sections, and 2 for the number of steps in each section — eight steps in total.

Four heavy-duty multi-position hinges join the sections. Each hinge carries a pair of spring-loaded locking pins that hold the joint rigid at 0°, 90° and 180°, which is what gives the ladder its four working shapes. Because everything is built from anti-rust aluminium alloy, the complete ladder weighs roughly 8 kg — light enough for one person to carry up a staircase, strong enough for a 150 kg working load.

It is the right size for homes, shops, offices, salons, churches, schools, hotels and site fit-out work in and around Nairobi: standard 2.4–3 m ceilings, gypsum and ceiling boards, curtain rails, CCTV cameras and alarms, bulb and fluorescent-tube changes, signage, cleaning, painting and general maintenance. If you regularly work on double-storey walls or high godown ceilings, step up to the FFL43 or FFL44.

Four working positions

1. A-frame step ladder

Fold the two outer joints and lock the centre hinge open. You get a free-standing, double-sided step ladder about 1.1 m tall — the position you will use most for ceilings, bulbs, curtains and painting.

2. Straight leaning ladder

Lock all four hinges flat for a single 2.3 m straight ladder to lean against a wall, water tank or roof edge. Set it at the 4:1 angle and tie off the top where you can.

3. L-shape / wall position

Lock one end section at 90° so the ladder stands against a wall while the folded section braces the base — useful in corridors, stairwells and tight corners.

4. Stair / uneven ground position

Set the two halves at different angles so all four feet land firmly on a staircase or sloping compound instead of packing stones or timber under one rail.

A low working platform can be formed by bridging two ladders with a certified scaffold plank. Only do this with a rated plank, on level ground, at a low height, and never with the ladder in the A-frame position.

How to use the Fundi FFL42 safely

  1. Inspect before every use. Look over the rails, rungs, rivets, hinge pins and rubber feet. A bent rail, a missing foot or a pin that does not spring back means the ladder is out of service until it is repaired.
  2. Choose your position. Decide on A-frame, straight, L-shape or stair position before you open anything — changing position while standing on the ladder is the most common cause of accidents.
  3. Release the hinge. Pull both locking pins on the hinge outwards at the same time and swing the section to the angle you want. Keep your fingers clear of the hinge plates as they close.
  4. Confirm the lock. Release the pins and push them home, then flex the joint by hand. Every hinge must click fully into place with the pins seated flush before anyone climbs.
  5. Set it on firm, level ground. All four feet must touch dry, solid ground. Never stand the ladder on loose murram, wet tiles, a table, a drum or a stack of blocks.
  6. Get the angle right when leaning. Use the 4:1 rule — the base sits one metre out from the wall for every four metres of height. Extend the top about a metre past a roof edge you intend to step onto.
  7. Climb correctly. Face the ladder, keep three points of contact, keep your hips between the rails, carry tools in a belt or pouch, and never stand on the top two steps of the A-frame.
  8. One person at a time. The 150 kg limit covers the user plus tools. Have a second person foot the ladder on windy or busy sites rather than climb with you.
  9. Fold, clean and store. Release the hinges, fold the sections together, wipe off paint, cement or oil, and store the ladder flat or hanging in a dry place away from direct sunlight and chemicals.

Safety warnings

  • Aluminium conducts electricity — keep well clear of overhead power lines, live boards and exposed wiring. Use a fibreglass ladder for electrical work.
  • Never exceed the 150 kg working load, and never use the ladder as a walk board, ramp, prop or trestle outside the positions described above.
  • Do not over-reach. Move the ladder instead of stretching sideways — if your belt buckle passes the rails, you have gone too far.
  • Do not modify the ladder: no drilling, welding, splicing or replacing hinge pins with nails or bolts.
  • Keep children off the ladder and fold it away after use.

Where the FFL42 is used

Home & apartment

Bulbs, curtain rails, ceiling fans, cleaning high windows, hanging TVs and picture frames, reaching store lofts.

Painters & fundis

Cutting in at ceiling level, gypsum and ceiling-board fixing, cornices, skimming and touch-ups in occupied rooms.

Shops & supermarkets

Restocking high shelves, changing price boards, banners, lighting and shop signage during trading hours.

Electricians & ICT

Trunking, data cabling, CCTV cameras, alarms and access points — on isolated, dead circuits only.

Schools, churches & halls

PA speakers, projectors, decorations, fans and general maintenance where a ladder must be carried between rooms.

Hotels & offices

Compact enough for lifts and corridors, folds away out of sight between jobs.

Care and maintenance

After each jobWipe down paint, cement, grease and mud, especially off the rungs — a slippery rung is the most common hazard on a clean-looking ladder.
MonthlyWork the hinges open and closed a few times; apply a light spray of penetrating oil (WD-40 type) to the pins and wipe off the excess.
Check regularlyRubber feet for wear, rivets for looseness, rails for bends or cracks, labels for legibility.
StorageDry, ventilated store, flat or hung on brackets. Do not leave it lying in the rain or against a wall where vehicles can knock it.
TransportFold and strap flat in a pickup or on a roof rack. Do not let it slide loose — a bent rail cannot be straightened safely.
Retire it whenAny rail is bent or cracked, a hinge no longer locks, or the ladder has taken a heavy fall or impact.

Frequently asked questions

What does 4×2 mean on the Fundi FFL42?

Four hinged sections with two steps in each — eight steps in total. The sections fold against each other for storage and open into a straight ladder, an A-frame or an L-shape.

How high does the FFL42 reach?

About 2.3 m fully extended as a straight ladder, giving roughly 3.2–3.5 m of working reach for an average adult. As an A-frame it stands about 1.1 m, which comfortably reaches a standard 2.4–3 m ceiling.

How much weight can it carry?

150 kg (330 lb), covering the user plus tools and materials. Keep the combined weight below that figure and use it one person at a time.

Is it strong enough for daily fundi work?

Yes for general maintenance, painting and fit-out. For continuous heavy site work at height, look at the larger FFL44 or a purpose-built scaffold tower.

Can I use it on a staircase?

Yes — that is what the stair position is for. Set the two halves at different angles so all four feet land firmly on the treads, and confirm every hinge is locked.

Can I use it for electrical work?

Only on isolated, dead circuits, and never near overhead lines. Aluminium conducts electricity; for live work use a fibreglass ladder.

Which size should I buy — 4×2, 4×3 or 4×4?

4×2 for homes, shops, offices and normal ceilings; 4×3 for high ceilings and mezzanines; 4×4 and above for double-storey walls and outdoor maintenance. Bigger sizes are heavier and need more storage room.
