How to Use the FFL43-FRP — Five Working Configurations
All four hinges use the same action: press and hold both spring buttons on a hinge, swing the section to the angle you want, release, then push the section until you hear and feel the detent seat. Never climb until every hinge has audibly locked.

A-Frame Step Ladder
Lock the two centre hinges at 90° so the ladder forms a self-supporting inverted V. Both pairs of feet on firm level ground, front and back legs equally spread.

Straight Extension Ladder
Lock all four hinges flat at 180° for the full 3.7 m. Lean at the 4:1 rule — one metre out at the base for every four metres of height — and extend at least three rungs above the landing point.

Follow the same eight steps every time, whichever configuration you are building.
Inspect before every use
Check the FRP stiles for cracks, splintering or exposed glass fibre; check every rung is tight in its stile; check all four hinges move freely and lock; check all four rubber feet are present and not worn through.
Prepare the ground
Set up on firm, level, non-slippery ground. Clear murram, loose gravel, wet tiles and cable runs. Never pack a short leg with bricks, blocks or timber.
Unfold away from your body
Stand the ladder upright and open it away from you so the sections cannot swing into your legs. Keep bystanders clear of the swing arc.
Set each hinge
Press both buttons on a hinge, swing the section to the angle you need, release the buttons and then move the section slightly until the detent seats with a positive click.
Confirm all four locks
Walk around the ladder and physically try to move each joint. A hinge that shifts is not locked. This is the single most important check on any articulating ladder.
Load test at ground level
Put your full weight on the first rung and rock gently side to side. Any rocking, twisting or sinking means the ground or the set-up is wrong — reset before climbing.
Climb correctly
Face the ladder. Maintain three points of contact. Carry tools in a belt or hoist them on a line — never in your hands. Keep your belt buckle inside the stiles, and stop at the third rung from the top on the A-frame.
Fold and store
Release the hinges in reverse order, fold flat, wipe off cement, paint or solvent while wet, and store upright in a dry place out of prolonged direct sun. Do not leave it lying in mud or standing water overnight.
Safe Working Practice
Most ladder injuries on Kenyan sites come from four causes: an unlocked hinge, soft ground, overreaching, and two people on one ladder.

- Confirm every hinge is fully locked before the first step.
- Apply the 4:1 angle rule in straight-ladder mode.
- Keep three points of contact and face the ladder at all times.
- Move the ladder rather than stretching sideways for one more reach.
- Keep FRP stiles clean and dry when working near electrical services.
- Use one person at a time, within the 150 kg total rating.
- Tie off or foot the ladder when working at full straight extension.
✗ Never Do
- Never climb with a hinge that has not clicked into its detent.
- Never stand on the top two rungs of the A-frame.
- Never place the ladder on boxes, drums, blocks or a vehicle bed.
- Never use a ladder with cracked, gouged or fibre-exposed stiles — retire it.
- Never bridge two ladders with an unrated plank or a loose timber.
- Never exceed 150 kg including body weight, tools and materials.
- Never drag or drop the ladder; impact damage to FRP is often invisible.

Care, Maintenance & Inspection
A fibreglass ladder that is looked after outlasts an aluminium one on a dusty site. One that is neglected fails without warning.
Routine care
- Wipe cement slurry, tile adhesive, paint and solvent off the stiles while still wet.
- Wash with mild soapy water and dry — never use thinner or aggressive solvent on FRP.
- Lightly oil the hinge pivots and button springs every few months; wipe off excess.
- Store upright, under cover, out of prolonged direct sunlight.
- Replace worn rubber feet as soon as the tread pattern disappears.
Retire the ladder if you see
- Cracks, deep gouges or exposed white glass fibre on any stile.
- A rung that rotates, rattles or has pulled loose in its stile.
- A hinge that will not seat positively, or a button that sticks.
- Any visible bend, twist or permanent set in a section.
- Damage after a fall, a vehicle impact or a heavy drop — even if it looks fine.

What does “4 x 3 step” actually mean?
It means four hinged sections with three rungs in each section — twelve climbing rungs in total. Laid out straight the ladder reaches about 3.7 metres; folded into an A-frame it stands about 1.85 metres to the top rung.
How high can I actually work from this ladder?
In straight-ladder mode an average adult reaches roughly 4.5 to 4.7 metres — comfortably enough for a single-storey roof edge, a shopfront fascia or a standard Nairobi ceiling. In A-frame mode you should stop at the third rung from the top, giving a comfortable working height of about 3.5 metres overhead reach.
Is the fiberglass version really safer for electrical work?
Fibreglass does not conduct electricity the way aluminium does, which is why FRP is the standard specification for electrical trades worldwide. That protection depends on the stiles being clean and dry — wet, dirty or contaminated stiles can carry current. Treat it as one safety layer, not a substitute for isolating the supply. Will it fit in my car?
Folded it is about 0.98 m long, 0.42 m wide and around 0.20 m thick, so it goes into the boot of most saloon cars and into any pickup, van or matatu without a roof rack.
