Product Overview

What this waterproof shade net is and why 400 GSM matters in Kenyan weather.

The Waterproof Shade Net 100% 400GSM Green is not an open-weave shade cloth. It is a closed, laminated HDPE sheet engineered so that light and water cannot pass through the fabric body at all. Standard 70% or 90% shade nets are knitted with deliberate gaps — they cool a space but rain goes straight through. This 400 gram-per-square-metre grade is coated on both faces, giving you the shading of a shade net with the sealing performance of a tarpaulin, in one product.

At 400 GSM the sheet sits in the heavy-duty class. For comparison, a light garden cover is 80–120 GSM, a general-purpose tarpaulin is 180–250 GSM, and 400 GSM is the weight used for permanent car park canopies, market stall roofs and long-span walkway covers. The extra mass gives you higher tear resistance, better wind stability, and a far longer life under the strong Nairobi UV load.

The 25m × 3m roll is the practical size for a single run: one continuous 25 metre length with no joins along its span, 3 metres wide. That covers roughly five to six car bays in a line, a 25 metre pedestrian walkway, a long greenhouse roof section, or a boundary rain screen — without any seam-sealing work in the middle of the run.

Buying tip: GSM is the single most useful number when comparing waterproof shade nets. If a supplier quotes only "heavy duty" without a GSM figure, ask for the weight per square metre. A 400 GSM roll of 75 m² should weigh close to 30 kg — weighing the roll is the quickest honest check you can do.

Where This 400GSM Waterproof Shade Net Is Used

Common applications for the 25m x 3m green waterproof shade net in Kenya.

Car Park & Carport Canopies

A 25 m run at 3 m wide shelters five to six parking bays end to end, keeping vehicles cool and dry and protecting paintwork from sun and rain.

Walkways & Corridors

Covered access between buildings in schools, churches, clinics and offices — one roll gives a continuous 25 m covered walkway.

Patios, Verandas & Backyards

Turns an open terrace into an all-weather outdoor room. Rain runs off instead of soaking furniture.

Greenhouse Roofing & Nurseries

Full block-out roofing over propagation areas, drying sheds and seedling stores where direct sun and rain must both be excluded.

Livestock & Poultry Shelters

Rainproof roofing and windbreak side-curtains for cattle sheds, goat pens, poultry runs and calf housing.

Construction Site Covers

Scaffold screening, cement and aggregate covers, curing protection for fresh concrete, and temporary site store roofing.

Market Stalls & Kiosks

Durable stall roofing for open-air markets, food courts and roadside businesses trading through both dry and wet seasons.

Privacy & Boundary Screens

Fixed to a fence or wall it becomes a solid 100% privacy screen that also stops wind-driven rain and dust.

Event & Tent Covers

Emergency rain covers for tents, stages, sound equipment and catering areas at outdoor functions.

Stage 1

Plan & Prepare — before the sheet leaves the roll

  • 1 Measure and plan the slope first

Measure the area and set your fixing points so the sheet falls at least 1 in 20 across the 3 m width — a minimum 150 mm drop from the high edge to the low edge.

Why: a flat fix ponds water — just 20 mm over 75 m² is over a tonne of load
  • 2 Allow slack for tensioning

Set the anchor points 150 – 250 mm beyond the sheet edges so ropes and turnbuckles have room to pull.

Never plan for the sheet to reach edge to edge with no rope run
  • 3 Prepare the frame

Fix eye bolts, hook bolts or purlin clamps at roughly 1 metre centres to match the eyelet spacing. Round off or tape over sharp edges, exposed bolt threads and rough weld beads.

Abrasion, not sunlight, is what kills most shade nets
Stage 2

Lift & Fix — getting the sheet square on the frame

  • 4 Unroll and position on a calm morning

Unroll the 25 m length on clean ground first, check for transit damage, then lift into place.

Use 2 – 4 people: a 30 kg sheet catching wind at height is dangerous alone
  • 5 Fix the four corners first

Rope through the reinforced corner patches and tie loosely. Square the sheet up before tightening anything.

A sheet fixed out of square will always crease and flap
  • 6 Work from the centre outwards

Fix the middle eyelet of each edge next, then work out towards the corners alternately, left and right.

Spreads tension evenly and stops diagonal wrinkles forming
Stage 3

Tension, Seal & Settle — the details that buy you years

  • 7 Tension evenly — firm, not drum tight

The sheet should be taut with no sag pockets, but not stretched until eyelets deform into ovals.

An eyelet pulling into a teardrop shape means release and redistribute
  • 8 Seal and shed water at the joins

Where two rolls overlap, lap the upper sheet over the lower one by 150 – 200 mm in the direction of fall, so water runs over the join rather than into it.

Seal with PE-compatible waterproof seam tape or bituminous lap tape
  • 9 Protect the eyelets

Eyelet holes are the natural weak point in any waterproof sheet. Keep them on the high side of the slope and cushion the pull with a rubber washer or shade-sail bungee.

Avoid hard steel-to-metal contact at the eyelet
  • 10 Re-tension after the first two weeks

All polyethylene sheets relax slightly after initial loading. Go round every rope once after two weeks.

Then re-check at the start of every rainy season
Seal with PE-compatible waterproof seam tape or bituminous lap tape
  • Avoid hard steel-to-metal contact at the eyelet
  • Then re-check at the start of every rainy season
  • Care and maintenance

Cleaning: Wash with plain water and a soft brush, or mild soap for stubborn dirt. Never use thinner, petrol, diesel, acetone or a stiff wire brush — solvents attack the lamination.

Inspection: Check eyelets, corner patches and seams at the start of each rainy season. Repair a small tear immediately with PE repair tape on both faces; a 20 mm tear left alone becomes a 2 metre tear in one windy night.

Storage: If removing the sheet seasonally, make sure it is completely dry, fold it loosely (avoid hard repeated creases at the same line), and store it in shade off the ground and away from rodents.

Cutting to size: Cut with a sharp knife or, better, a hot knife which seals the edge. Then fold the cut edge back 40 – 50 mm, double stitch it, and fit new eyelets before tensioning.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 400GSM green shade net really 100% waterproof?

Yes. Unlike an open-weave 70% or 90% shade net, this fabric is laminated and coated so no water passes through the sheet body. Rain runs off the surface. The only possible entry points are stitched seams and eyelet holes, which is why the installation guide above places them on the high side of the slope.

How many square metres does a 25m x 3m roll cover?

75 square metres — enough for roughly five to six standard car parking bays in a line, a 25 metre covered walkway, a long greenhouse roof section, or a 25 metre boundary screen.

How long will it last in the Kenyan sun?

Three to five years of outdoor service is realistic with correct tensioning. The UV stabiliser is compounded into the yarn rather than sprayed on the surface, so it does not wash off. What actually shortens life is flapping, ponded water and abrasion against sharp frame edges — all of which are installation issues.

What slope should I give the net so water drains properly?

A minimum fall of 1 in 20, which is about 5% or a 150 mm drop across the 3 metre width. Anything flatter will hold rainwater, form a pond, and eventually tear the eyelets out under the weight.

Can I cut the roll to a smaller size?

Yes. Cut with a sharp or hot knife, then fold the cut edge back 40 to 50 mm, double stitch it, and fit new eyelets. A raw uncut edge left unfinished will fray and tear in wind.

Does it come in colours other than green?

Green is the standard stocked colour. Green/silver and green/black combinations, plus other sizes such as 50m x 3m and 50m x 4m, are available on order. Call 0741 042484 to check current stock.

Can it be used as a greenhouse cover for growing plants?

Only where full block-out is wanted — drying sheds, curing rooms, equipment stores or hardening-off areas. Because it stops 100% of light, it is not suitable directly over growing crops that need sunlight. For those, use our 70% or 90% knitted shade nets instead.

Do you deliver in Nairobi and beyond?
